319. THE DIRTY DOZEN If at all possible avoid regular soft drinks. Each can contains from 8 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. At 15 calories per teaspoon that's 180 totally empty calories. You don't need to consume many soft drinks per day to add hundreds of extra calories to your diet (and waistline!). Substitute water for soft drinks.
