Fat & Protein Meals Lower Blood Sugar

High-sugar meals and drinks cause Large increases in blood sugar (glucose) that may promote insulin resistence and increased body fat. Glucose from table sugar (sucrose), white bread and white rice enter the system rapidly, causing large increases in blood sugar and insulin. Canadian researches found that adding protein and fat to a high-sugar drink reduced blood sugar response in proportion to dose. Protein lowered blood sugar more thasn fats. They measured blood sugar and insulin after subjects consumed a high-sugar drink. They repeated the experiment many times adding various combinations of fats, proteins and fiber to the drink. Decreases in blood sugar occurred most in people with the largest fiber intake waist size. This study showed the importance of dietary proteins in regulating blood sugar.( Journal Nutrition, 136:2506-2511, 2006)
